Who is the data controller

The data controller is Julien Riel, publisher of this personal site (https://julien-riel.com). For any question about your data, write to rgpd@julien-riel.com.

What data is collected

This site has no forms, no accounts, and collects no personal data beyond what is described below.

If you give consent via the banner shown on your first visit, the site loads Google Analytics 4 (Google Ireland Ltd.), which sets cookies and collects:

  • Pages viewed, time on page, scroll depth
  • Outbound link clicks, language switches, RSS clicks
  • Technical data: device type, browser, OS, language
  • IP address (anonymized — last octet truncated before storage)

No data is used for targeted advertising. Google Signals is disabled, and ad personalization is turned off.

Legal basis and purpose

The legal basis is your consent (GDPR art. 6-1-a), collected through the banner before any cookie is set. Until you accept, no analytics cookies are set and no data is sent to Google — Google's Consent Mode v2 is configured as denied by default.

The purpose is strictly statistical: understanding which essays are read, where readers come from, and which topics matter — to inform what to write next.

Cookies set

If you accept, the following cookies may be set by Google Analytics:

  • _ga: unique visitor identifier — 2 years
  • _ga_<ID>: GA4 session state — 2 years

No advertising cookies, no social network pixels, no additional third-party trackers.

Transfers outside the EU

Google Analytics involves transfers of data to the United States. Google relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses to frame these transfers.

Retention

Analytics data is retained by Google Analytics for 14 months, then automatically deleted.

Your rights

Under GDPR, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, object to, and port your data. To exercise these rights, write to rgpd@julien-riel.com. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (in France: CNIL).

Withdrawing your consent

You can withdraw consent at any time by clearing this site's cookies and localStorage in your browser settings. The banner will show again on your next visit.

Changes

This policy may be updated to reflect technical or legal changes. The date at the top of the page indicates the last revision.
